Can’t make it to the shops today? A new iPad app called AisleOne is making it possible for Aussies to get their groceries from the comfort of their home in just a few easy steps.

Launched by online retailer Aussie Farmers Direct, AisleOne looks just like a shop where users can simply ‘click and pick’ the items they want from the shelves and drop them into their basket. It’s been created to make customers feel like they’re in a supermarket, according to Aussie Farmers Direct CEO Keith Louie.

“AisleOne has been designed so that someone with little or no computer experience can pick it up and start using it immediately. Browsing through each virtual aisle is as easy as swiping left or right across the screen,” he said.

Users can skip to specific aisles or look for them using the search toolbar. They can also schedule items to be automatically ordered on a regular basis. There are no delivery fees and customers don’t need to be waiting at home for their order to arrive.

5 top tips to care for your teeth

As people age, it becomes more important to keep your pearly whites in good nick, especially with the increased risk of gum disease. Poor oral health is associated with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. However, 90 per cent of dental disease is preventable, according to the Australian Dental Association.

Here, are five ways that you can take better care of your teeth.

•           Use an electronic toothbrush. “It’s consistently going to do a better job in getting to hard-to-reach areas and they’re timed, so you’ll be cleaning your teeth for the recommended two minutes,” says periodontist Dr Kate Burgess. Little interdental brushes can also be helpful, as the gaps between our teeth get larger as we age and floss is no longer as effective.

•           Use a fluoride toothpaste. There are a lot of different toothpastes on the market to choose from, but pick one that has fluoride in it, says Dr Burgess. There’s an increased chance of gum disease and an increased amount of decay as people age and fluoride can prevent them from occurring.

•           Stay hydrated. If you’re taking medication, dry mouth can take place, so keep your mouth moist by drinking water regularly, advises the Chatswood Dental Centre. Dry mouth can cause difficulty with eating and speaking.

•           Perfect your brushing technique. You may think you know how to brush your teeth, but most people miss cleaning their gumline. “If you are building a house and someone knocked the foundations down every night, you’re not going to get anywhere are you? That’s exactly what we find with plaque,” says Dr Burgess.

•           Clean your dentures regularly. If you wear dentures, don’t forget to clean inside and outside of your dentures with soap, not toothpaste, especially after meals. Make sure you clean your own gums and tongue twice a day, too.

Surrogate grandparents wanted

A not-for-profit online service called Find a Grandparent is connecting seniors with surrogate families to help foster friendships. For some seniors, who may live far away from their family and friends, it can be difficult to establish meaningful relationships with new people.

According to founder Cate Kloos, retirees can make a big difference to the lives of a young family by providing friendship, different views and experiences.

Seniors can register for Find a Grandparent on a voluntary basis, but it is a safety requirement for all participating surrogate grandparents to provide a current National Police Check beforehand.

Cruise among the stars

Legendary soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will be performing on board a luxurious cruise-liner sailing the South Pacific, joined by more than 30 other classical music artists.
