Biggest cyber attack in history
The world’s internet has been slowed down in one of the biggest cyber attacks in history. The attacks are believed to have occurred as part of a row between spam-fighting group Spamhaus and web-hosting firm Cyberbunker. Some experts say the disruption could get worse. Read more.
Super industry concerned over budget
The superannuation industry is nervous over what the budget may bring, especially amid rumours the Federal Government is planning to tax the system heavily to pay for policy commitments. While Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said she will pay for her most expensive election commitments – the Gonski school funding and the National Disability Insurance Scheme – Ms Gillard is being questioned about her plans for superannuation, as the money has to come from somewhere. Flu outbreak kills two
Two people have died in a Queensland nursing home due to an outbreak of the flu. Six residents from the facility were hospitalised with the influenza A virus. Patients were isolated in the home as soon as symptoms presented but a large number of residents were infected. Nine News has the full story.
New Zealand batsman in critical condition
New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder was involved in a fight in Christchurch, leaving him in critical condition in hospital. Ryder is in intensive care with a fractured skull and New Zealand police are investigating the incident. Read more.
Sinkhole swallows security guard
A sinkhole in the Shenzhen, China has swallowed a security guard, killing him instantly. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras. No official cause has been given yet but some residents had complained about tremors at a nearby construction site. Seven News has the details.
Severed head believed to be victim of serial killer
A severed head found more than twenty years ago has been identified as Heidi Balch, victim of New York serial killer Joel Rifkin. Police believe Balch was one of Rifkin’s 17 victims. News.com.au has the full story.
Doctor accused of killing more than 300 patients
A doctor in Brazil is facing charges, accused of killing more than 300 patients to free up hospital beds. Virginia Soares de Souza allegedly administered fatal doses of a muscle relaxant or cut of patients’ life support at Hospital Evangelico in southern Brazil. She was initially accused over the deaths of seven patients, but more cases opened up as more checks were made. Read more.
