Agar saves the day
Nineteen-year-old Australian bowler Ashton Agar broke five records on debut overnight in the second day of the first Ashes test to become the top scoring number 11 in test match history.
The young spinner contributed 98 to a 163-run partnership with Phil Hughes to rescue an innings that looked like falling well short of England’s 215 runs.
“Phil Hughes told me to take it ball by ball,” Agar said. “We just played in the moment and forgot about everything else. It was good fun.”
Australia was bowled out for 280. At close of play England’s second innings was at 2/80 after 43 overs, with Root (5) and Trott (0) both out, and Cook (37) and Pietersen (35) at the crease.

Young boxers kept as slaves
A Sydney-based boxing manager is being investigated by Australian Federal Police, accused of trafficking Filipino boxers and treating them as slaves.
ABC’s 7.30 report has revealed that as many as 20 young boxers were brought to Sydney to fight by Dido Bohol, with several reporting having their passports and prize money confiscated, and being kept as unpaid houseboys in appalling conditions.
Bohol has denied the allegations.
Firie rescue in Cairns
An off-duty auxiliary firefighter rescued his neighbour from a house fire in Cairns overnight. After Tim Kingston noticed smoke coming from his neighbour’s house, he switched off the house’s power and ran inside to help two men.
While one man left the house himself, the second was disoriented and required assistance. Kingston is being praised for his effort by the local emergency services.
Fuel spill shuts down Port Botany
Three people, including a firefighter, have received medical treatment after a 130,000-litre fuel spill at a Caltex terminal shut down operations at Sydney’s Port Botany. The fuel spilled into a containment area and plans are underway to pump it back into the tank.
