The 80s – A blast from the past
To celebrate Probus’ 40th anniversary, we will be showcasing photos of clubs through the years in the next few issues of Active Retirees. Here, we pay tribute to Probus in the 80s.
1. BRIGHTON and GLENELG, SA
The Probus Club of Brighton and Glenelg was the first Probus club in South Australia, which launched in 1981. Here is Gwyn Adams, district governor of Rotary, congratulating Brian Trott, foundation president of the club.
2. BROADBEACH, QLD
The Ladies Probus Club of Broadbeach was formed in 1984. It was the first ladies club in Queensland. One foundation member, Greta McComsky, is still a member of the club today. Here is a photo of the club’s second committee in 1985.
3. ENFIELD, SA
This is a photo of a meeting of the Probus Club of Enfield in South Australia in December 1983, which had just launched a few months beforehand.
4. FLAGSTAFF HILL, SA
The Probus Club of Flagstaff Hill celebrated its first birthday in 1984. Here is president Wal Fielder cutting the cake.
5. INNISFAIL, NSW
When the Innisfail Men’s Probus Club had its first meeting on 28 February in 1985, there were 18 foundation members who attended, as well
as executive members of the Cairns Probus Club. Since then, Innisfail has become a combined club.
6. MALENY, NSW
Here is a shot from the very first Maleny Probus Club meeting in 1987, where the club was presented with a brass gong and mallet.
7. MT GRAVATT, QLD
The Probus Club of Mt Gravatt in Queensland is one of the oldest in the state. It commenced in April 1981. Here is a photo of the club’s foundation president, Herb Collie, in 1981. When he turned 100 years old, Herb celebrated with his fellow Probians.
8. MOSMAN, NSW
Here are several members of the Probus Combined Club of Mosman, lazing around in the sun. The club opened in 1982.
9. SARINA, QLD
On 10 August 1987, the Probus Club of Sarina had its very first meeting. The president was Paul Newberry.
