September 7 election
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a September 7 election over the weekend, starting a five-week campaign before the vote. Rudd and Tony Abbot have delivered their pitches for the race with both promising positive plans. For a live blog of how it all happened, see ABC News.
Retirees worried about finances
Despite topping the list of those most financially secure, many retirees are starting to worry about their financial future. A survey by ME Bank has shown that retirees have turned more pessimistic, with their financial comfort deteriorating by five per cent. Read more.
Aid package for car makers
The Federal Government is expected to announce a $200 million package to boost the national car industry. The announcement will include the undertaking that 100 per cent of all Commonwealth fleet cars will be Australian made. ABC News has more.

Egypt’s government has agreed to international mediation in a bid to resolve the country’s political crisis. The US and European Union held meetings with officials from Egypt to encourage reconciliation and avoid further bloodshed. Read more.
Car drives onto Venice Beach boardwalk
An Italian woman on her honeymoon has died and dozens more have been injured after a man deliberately rammed his car into tourists on Venice Beach boardwalk. The 38-year-old driver has been charged with murder. Nine News has more.
