Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman found dead
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in Capote, has been found dead in his New York City apartment in an apparent drug overdose. The actor was found dead by emergency crews responding to a call from a friend. Investigators found what is believed to be heroin in his apartment. ABC News has the full story.

Death toll from volcano eruption expected to rise
Indonesian officials have discovered 15 bodies in the rubble and ash after the eruption of Mount Sinabung. Rescuers searched through ash up to 30 centimetres thick. Skydiver survives 12,000ft plunge
A British skydiver lost control of a steering toggle and smashed into a van, plunging 12,000ft in Fiji. Ben Cornick from Wales is recovering in a hospital in New Zealand following his accident. Cornick snapped his arm, broke his right thigh bone in three places and badly damaged his knee caps. Read more.
Man washes up on shore after surviving 16 months at sea
A man has washed up on a remote Pacific shore, claiming he survived 16 months adrift. Locals discovered the man when his 24-foot fibreglass boat floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll. He claims he floated more than 12,500 kilometres from Mexico. News.com.au has more.
