Australia on heatwave alert
Emergency services around the country are on high alert as temperatures soar into the high 30s and 40s. The heatwave is on a particularly large scale, both in land area and temperatures. See the ABC for the forecast highs in your nearest capital city or for more detailed information, go to The Weather Channel. Remember to drink plenty of water and stay sun safe if you’re out and about.
Fiscal cliff resolution
Global markets have surged after US politicians agreed to a deal to stop the economy falling over the fiscal cliff. The agreement increased taxes on wealthier Americans, raising $US620 billion over 10 years. Financial analysts say that the deal is good in the short-term, but more has to be done in the long-term. Victorian dies in Phuket
A 21-year-old Victorian man has died in Phuket after falling off a balcony on New Year’s Day. The circumstances of his death are not known at this stage. Read more on The Age. We’ll also keep you posted on our Twitter feed if more details are released.
Old drivers at risk
The road toll among teens and people in their early 20s has fallen to new lows over the past five years. However, there has been a significant rise in the deaths of road users aged 60 and over. More people in the 40-59 year age bracket have been killed on the roads than 17-25 year olds. Read the full story on News.com.au.
Veteran’s sight restored in unusual circumstances
World War II veteran, Robert Chapman, has had to wear long-distance, bifocal and reading glasses for over 50 years. However, a recent fall while walking his dog has restored his sight. The only glasses he now needs are sunglasses. Read the miraculous story.
Test of tributes
The New Year’s Test starts today at the SCG with a moving tribute to Tony Grieg. Opposing captains have invited Greig’s family and his fellow commentators onto the pitch to line up next to the teams at the anthem ceremony. Read the full story.
Spectators have been urged via Twitter and the Cricket Australia website to wear wide-brimmed hats for Greig, zinc for retiring Michael Hussey and pink for Jane McGrath.
