Creating the perfect vertical garden

Whether it’s working within the confines of a balcony or decorating a wall, vertical gardens can bring a sense of greenery to any space. Here’s a handy step-by-step guide to creating your own vertical piece of heaven.
1. Choose your location
Look around your space carefully and choose the best spot. You’ll need to keep in mind the amount of sunlight that hits the wall you’ve chosen and where the nearest tap is. Just because it’s vertical, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be watered.
2. Measure the space
In order to purchase the correct amount of materials, you’ll need to know how big the space is. So pull out the good old measuring tape and map out where you want the vertical garden to go.
3. Purchase the materials
There are loads of options when it comes to the materials to use. Many hardware stores will have ready-made units that you can fi x to the wall and then plant on. If you want to take do-it-yourself to the next level, you’ll need a frame made out of good, solid material. Again, hardware stores will be able to point you in the right direction. Additionally, you’ll need something to pop the plants into. Whatever you choose, make sure the pots or troughs are smart-watering ones and allow for water to drop through rather than pool at the bottom. Many people will use a hook mechanism that pots or troughs can hang off.
4. Choose the plants
You really can go nuts here and don’t feel pressured to only choose one type of plant. Feel free to mix flowers with herbs and succulents. Just remember, each type of plant will need a different amount of attention, so it’s best to group them together. The great thing about a vertical garden is that you can change the plants and the look according to what’s in season. They’re a fantastic way to dress up a small space, plus it’s been proven that having greenery around not only makes us happier but also improves air quality. Overall, it’s really a win-win situation!
