4 ways to stay fit on holidays

Keeping up health routines while away from home need not be a drag. Here's how to stay in top shape while having a break.
Keeping fit on holidays can be as simple as walking instead of using public transport or cabs.
One of the best things about going on holiday is having the chance to kick back and relax; your only concern is to enjoy yourself. It’s also a time to break free from your regular schedule, which can make it difficult to stay in shape.
Whether you prefer to break a sweat shopping in a massive mall in Dubai or by kayaking in a beautiful waterhole in the Northern Territory, there are lots of fun ways to include exercise in your timetable.
Here are four tips to get you started. But most of all, remember to enjoy yourself while on holiday.
1 Be creative
Not in the mood for a regimented fitness timetable? Why not have fun and get fit by signing up for an exciting new activity at your destination? It’s a fabulous way to stay healthy and take advantage of your new environment. How about yoga classes on the beach in Bali? Or cycling through the French countryside? Or swimming among the colourful fish in Thailand?
2 Choose walking over public transport
So many cities are best discovered while on foot, where you can interact with the locals and check out the neighbourhood. There’s so much more you can see when you’re getting in among the community, from chatting with shopkeepers and enjoying delicacies at a food stall to simply experiencing the fascinating sights and smells of the town.
Another option is to sign up for a walking tour, where you can enjoy the benefits of a tour guide showing you around the city while on foot. And don’t forget to choose to take the stairs where you can, like the airport or the hotel.
3 Eat healthily
Of course, relax and kick back while on holiday. But if you’re worried about packing on the kilos during your break, there are ways of being able to experience the culture and food while on holiday and still stay fit. Why not try some of the delicious local fruit and vegetables to keep things exciting? Enjoy lychees, coconuts and dragon fruit in south east Asia, or fresh tomatoes, zucchinis and eggplant in Italy.
Meanwhile, if you’re on a cruise ship, beware of the buffet table and make sure you don’t over do it. Another tip is to be aware of your water intake. Carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go so you still have your six glasses each day.
4 Work out at the hotel
If you want to stay in shape during your holiday, choose a hotel that has a few facilities that you can use, like a swimming pool, a health club or a gym. Another option is to work out in your hotel room. Some travellers like to pack a skipping rope in their luggage or do sets of sit-ups and push-ups while on holiday. Don’t forget to pack your running shoes and gym gear if necessary.
