Samford Valley sing-along

Over 40 excited Probus members and invited guests departed in our hired coach from Parklands on a perfect winter morning. Our bus driver Eric entertained us by playing his CDs with fabulous, memorable music from the 60s, while many passengers sang along, word for word.

Chilly Kilcoy was where we all enjoyed homemade biscuits and slices and a hot cuppa, while overlooking a huge man-made lagoon housing some wildlife. Even a lonely pelican was observed in his unexpected surroundings.

On arrival in Esk, we were greeted by Dennis, one of the many happy volunteers from the Esk Bushbashers. A group of talented entertainers dressed in appropriate gear strutted their stuff in a room full of eager guests. Many musical instruments were played. A lady called Cookie was wearing a billy tea apron and proudly played the small mouth organ and gave a rendition of well-known songs and bush poetry. Two very accomplished musicians played their piano accordion. The gentleman on the piano certainly could bash out a good tune. One man with the vibrant red bushy beard in the background strung away on his beloved guitar.

Then it was lunch time. The entree, a beautiful homemade pumpkin soup, was served piping hot, with fresh buttered bread. Second course was a fresh colourful salad dished up by the cheerful Uniting Church female volunteers and dessert was a tantalising crushed pineapple served with a scoop of ice cream, with a cuppa to finish off our feast.

The finale of it all was the audience and band members serenading who ever wanted to listen. They sang songs such as When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, Sweet Rosie O'Grady and One Day At A Time. Road of the Isles was sung in Welsh by Andy Jones, a Welshman. A magnificent strong voice, most enjoyable.

All too soon our departure was imminent. As we said our goodbyes, our ladies were each presented with a posy of flowers. On the bus back home, the topic of conversation was what a magnificent time we had all experienced.

Congratulations and thanksmust go to Lyle, who did a fabulous job organising the outing in a short space of time. She really is a very good cook. Members’ and visitors’ comments were all very positive and many considered it the best Probus outing so far.
