A beginner’s guide to running

Running is a good all-round workout that anyone of any age can get involved in. Not only is it great for maintaining cardiovascular health, it costs nothing and opens doors to a new social outlet. It’s time to lace up your sneakers and get going.
Think you’re too old to start running? Think again. “A lot of people have negative connotations with running, but there are ways of introducing people to it which aren’t as dramatic. It doesn’t have to be high impact,” says Tim Crosbie, recreational running coordinator at Athletics Victoria.
Before getting started
It is a good idea to get checked out by your GP, especially if you’ve sustained a past injury or have a critical medical history. Make sure your heart is in good condition, cholesterol levels are under control and your basic physical is in the clear.
“Getting fitted shoes and temperature regulated clothing is a great investment, as what you spend could potentially save you from medical bills for physiotherapy if things go wrong,” adds Tim.
Pace yourself
Whether you’re a former runner or you’re giving it a go for the first time, it is best to take it slow. Going too hard and too fast can lead to joint pain. Plus, you may not enjoy the sport and simply give it up.
Slowly build your body up to take on your running so you don’t do any damage to your joints, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve done much exercise.
“Set realistic targets and ease yourself into it by combining running and walking. This will gradually increase your endurance levels,” Tim recommends.
Don’t forget to do a gentle stretch before your run to increase mobility around your joints and get your blood flowing.
The health benefits of running
One of the beauties of running is it allows you to enjoy the open air while regenerating your system, especially if you run in a lush national park. It is a good workout for your heart and it raises your endorphins, while you enjoy the scenery.
Running is also an ideal way to make new friends or spend time with existing friends.
“Joining a running group could be incredibly beneficial for a retiree,” says Tim. “It allows for social interaction which makes it an easier pastime. It also provides a safe environment to run in.”
